What is a Veneer?

A veneer is a thin layer of tooth-coloured ceramic or composite material bonded on the front surfaces of your teeth to change their appearance.

The technology behind these tooth-coloured materials has advanced significantly in recent years so that often only a minimal amount of the tooth is removed to make room for them. Once fixed in place they usually last for many years.

The process of having veneers is similar to that for crowns – after the minimal preparations are done, impressions are taken with a soft material so that models of the teeth can be made. The dental technician then builds up the veneer ready for the dentist to fix it in place.

Veneers can also be made from composite filling material directly onto your tooth in the surgery.

Once the measurements are done, then your dentist will prepare the tooth for the veneer. This is not a painful procedure; however, your dentist may think that it is better to give you local anesthesia to make things easier for you. Once the measurements are finalized, then it may take one or two weeks before your dental veneer is ready.
